Planning + Engineering

ENGINEERING WORKS

In the heart of HORN®'s knowhow in Plössberg, five individual engineering departments work to design the perfect glass melting technology solutions for customers. The 140 engineers and technicians refer to over 135 years of experience to create innovative yet approved constructions. The several departments and their competencies are presented in the following:

REFRACTORY DESIGN DEPARTMENT

With about 20 furnace design engineers, HORN® has an approximate refractory engineering capacity of 1,050 hours per month. Meeting the customers’ requirements for different furnace types, HORN® can create various refractory drawings. This happens in three steps, starting with the basic planning, followed by detailed planning and finally assembly drawings. The software in use are AutoCAD, AutoCAD 3D or Inventor 3D, according to customers’ request. The bill of materials will be prepared in Excel.

STEEL DESIGN DEPARTMENT

In this department, 19 skilled HORN® steel design engineers plan the required furnace steel constructions with an engineering capacity of 5 major projects simultaneously. To ensure highest quality, the concept creation only happens with comparison of all adjacent peripherals and has to pass a static testing. HORN® provides a 3D model with all required parts lists and, if requested, NC data.  The 3D model is the basis for the subsequent detailed production and assembly drawings. Optionally, all maintenance platforms can be planned out in detail. The complete documentation of the necessary steel construction for the furnace will be provided, thus facilitating the smooth realisation of the project.

ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT

20 HORN® electrical engineers are responsible for the automation of the customers’ plants. Therefore, the engineering tools normally used for the planning are EPLAN or SIEMENS (Step 7, Win CC, PCS 7, TIA Portal), but upon customer's request HORN® can also offer ABB, Allen-Bradley, Honeywell or Eurotherm. Besides the planning, this department also takes care of the manufacturing and instrumentation of the beforehand planned tools. To name a few examples, HORN® electrical engineers provide the customer with control panels, power panels (MCC) or boosting systems.

UTILITY DEPARTMENT

For customers who need contemporary and reliable utilities, The HORN® utility department provides customers with state-of-the-art utilites, ensured by an engineering capacity of 1,600 hours per month. Any kind of fluid can be handled by this department. To name a few, natural gas, heavy fuel oil, gas/air mixtures, hydrogen and many others run through HORN® pipelines. The utility department provides also their own HORN® burner series to improve significantly the glass melting process. The utilities are subject to 10 especially skilled, gas-certified engineers offering several services, such as media layouts, process flow diagrams, detailed assembly engineering and documentation. HORN® experts even provide on-site services, from commissioning through optimisation up to maintenance to ensure a flawless working plant for each and every customer worldwide.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Anything related to machines will be planned and engineered in this department by 10 mechanical engineers. HORN® provides concept development and detailed engineering for all machines for float and container lines and therefore covers several fields, such as charging and stirrer technology, special installations & machines and tin bath equipment. If the standard design does not fit the customers' requirements, HORN® can design special installations, engineer (new) machines or create new products. For optimised visualisation, the engineers plan in 3D with simulation views.
