Flags are used to control tin flows at the sides of the bath, which maybe producing ribbon instability and/or distortion.
Made from carbon, different types/designs of flags are used depending on their required position in the bath.
There are two different types of Flags:
- Full depth flags
- Submerged flags
Regardless of the type or location, they both serve the same purpose. That is to control the flow of tin in the bath, thus improving ribbon stability. A full depth flag consists of a thin graphite rectangle bolted to a steel bracket. This type of flag would be applied near the shoulders. The submerged flag is used in the area further upstream.
