Why functional safety?
When it comes to monitoring a thermal processing plant or melting furnace, there are a number of exacting specifications with regard to equipment and operational safety, functionality and efficiency. Several relevant EC directives and standards must be considered when operating the electric, electronic and mechanical engineering equipment as well as the utility engineering equipment of these plants.
Particularly decisive is Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
In this context it is important to examine the expectations and standards of the operator in cooperation with the respective manufacturer.
Our trained employees of the functional safety department at HORN will explain to you the connections and demands on the design of protective systems . They will describe which steps are possible and necessary in order to operate a safe furnace in different operating modes e.g. in high- and/or low-demand range, independently from the manufacturer.
The int. standardisation defines the demands in relation to the reliability of safety functions (Safety Integrity Level SIL or Performance Level PL, respectively) with the goal to minimise the risks for persons, environment, products and processes in case of a malfunction.
Subject to the regulations HORN implemented a well grounded and adaptable safety network for each machine and system.
